Pour-Over Brewing Guide for Beginners

Pour-over brewing is the easiest way to taste your coffee clearly

Pour-over brewing is a manual method where you pour hot water over ground coffee in a filter cone. It gives you a clean, bright cup and total control over the result, which is exactly why it is the best place for a beginner to start.

Hot water poured in a slow spiral over coffee grounds in a ceramic dripper

What you need

  • A dripper and paper filters.
  • Fresh, medium-ground coffee — about 15 g.
  • A scale and a kettle, ideally gooseneck.
  • 250 g of water at roughly 94 °C.

Step by step

  1. Rinse the filter and warm the dripper, then discard the water.
  2. Add coffee, tare the scale, and start a timer.
  3. Pour twice the coffee weight in water to bloom for 30 seconds.
  4. Pour in slow spirals to your target weight, finishing around 2:45.

Dialling it in

If your pour-over tastes sour, grind finer or pour slower; if it tastes bitter, grind coarser. Our water guide and roast guide both help you adjust. For deeper technique, the Barista Hustle resources are excellent.
